LEAK$

Small, continuous leaks will waste large amounts of water. In addition, leaks in hot-water lines will waste heat. Keep all valves and faucets tight. When a leak develops, replace faucet washers. If valves or faucets are damaged, replace faucet or valve assembly.

Trouble in the toilet?

The toilet can be the biggest water waster in your house. Try these tests to see if your toilet is the trouble.
1. Inlet valve - lets water into the tank. If you hear a hiss or a squeal, try adjusting the float first. Then check this valve - it could need replacing. If the valve is bad, you'll find water leaking into overflow tube.
How to fix it: - Get a new inlet valve at your local hardware store and follow directions carefully. Make sure you shut off the water supply and flush the toilet first.
2. Float - If the tank is full, but your water keeps running, pull up on the float. If the water stops running, you need to adjust the float.
How to fix it: It may be as easy as bending the float down. But be careful - sometimes they break.
3. Stopper Flat - should fit tightly over the bottom of the tank. If it doesn't, the tank will not refill and you'll have a constant flow of water. (The food coloring test will show you if you have a problem here.)
How to fix it: Get a new stopper flap at your local hardware store and follow directions carefully. Helpfully. Helpful hint: Make sure the new flap seats snug on the hole in the bottom of the tank.
Food coloring Test - Put food coloring in the tank water. 15 minutes later, check the water in the bowl.
If you see the food coloring in the bowl, you have a leak.
